Meet the Candlemaker | The Story Behind ScentScapes Candle Company

Hi there! My name is Amy. I’m the creator and candlemaker here at ScentScapes Candle Company. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you a little about my candles.

I founded ScentScapes Candles in 2024 in Indianapolis after stumbling in to one of those candle-making bars. I’m a certified beer sommelier. (Which means, if you gave me a beer, I could tell you its style and which region of the world it’s from; for example, a German Pilsner, an American IPA, a Belgian Saison, an English Stout). As I began blending the fragrance oils together to create something new, I felt like it just clicked. When the lady helping me took a whiff of my final concoction, the pleasant surprise on her face got my wheels turning.

I’d been wanting to start a business.

Maybe candle-making was it?

I thought about it for a while. Dabbled with it for a bit as a hobby. I’d recently had a book published. I love writing and wanted to do something more with it. Something creative. I didn’t necessarily want to write another whole book. (At least not for a while.)

Then it hit me. It was one of those can’t sleep, 3:00 a.m. light bulb moments. Why don’t you make candles and write little stories to go along with the fragrance? I immediately turned to my phone and began brainstorming, jotting down notes and ideas.

So my other passion is travel. I’ve always wanted to travel, ever since I can remember. My first memory was staring wide-eyed out of an airplane window at age two when my mom took me to California. I remember watching the clouds go by. Looking at it all with such wonder. Ever since, I’ve had an insatiable appetite for wanting to know what’s beyond my front door.

I’ve traveled quite a bit. I’ve been all over the States, to almost every major U.S. city from LA to NYC, once to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and once to the southern-most point in the Florida Keys. My first overseas trip was to Thailand. I’ve also been to Vietnam, Tokyo, Prague, Spain, Dublin, India and Cuba. I even once worked on a cruise ship as a shopping guide where I traveled all over the Caribbean and parts of Mexico.

I’m always planning my next adventure!

When I was thinking about what to write, what types of stories to tell, what types of fragrances could I design around a narrative, I immediately thought of travel. Most of my candles draw inspiration from my travels.

And then I decided, wouldn’t it be so unique to package them like a book with their story included inside!?

I launched with the online store in October and in 2025 started showcasing my candles at local popup markets and vendor events. It’s been such a joy meeting you and it warms my heart watching your faces light up when you experience ScentScapes Candles for the first time.

Feel free to drop me a line and say hi! I always love hearing your travel stories. If you ever have a candle fragrance you’d like me to make in the future, I’m always open to your ideas and suggestions!

Warmest Wishes,

Amy
